The iPhone maker, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) of California, United States is working with the largest wind turbine manufacturer in the world to make 285 megawatts of clean energy. This would make it the company’s biggest clean energy project ever. In fact, Apple has already purchased a 30 percent stake in three subsidiaries of the Chinese firm Xinjiang Goldwind, which is the biggest wind-turbine maker in the country.

Goldwind issued a statement saying that the project will be spread out across four provinces in China, namely Yunnan, Shanxi, Henan, and Shandong.

For Apple, this is a priority area, as the company’s long-term goal is to meet 100 percent of its energy requirements from renewable sources. Lisa Jackson, who is the vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives at Apple said, “We should help our supply chain become greener and more sustainable. So, instead of giving them fish, we want to teach them how to fish”.

Greenpeace Attacks Apple and Other Electronics Manufacturers

The company Chief Executive, Tim Cook, have already announced that they will be boosting the efficiency of their manufacturing partners in China. Greenpeace, the environmental protection group, had earlier issued a warning saying that electronics manufacturers such as Apple were consuming a lot of energy in China, and contributing to the high pollution in the country. Many of Apple’s products are manufactured in China. Apple also sells one-fifth of their products in this East Asian country.

China is one of the most polluted countries in the world. There is so much pollution in large cities such as Beijing and Shanghai that there is always a layer of fog over these cities. In fact, the city authorities had to close and relocate many industries from the outskirts of Beijing before the Summer Olympics of 2008, which was held here.

Other Apple Initiatives in China

Of course, this is not the first time Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) is investing in clean energy. Previously, the company had supported a 40-megawatt solar power project in southwest China, in the province of Sichuan. Apple had also supported three solar power projects in Inner Mongolia to generate 170 megawatts clean energy.

China is investing heavily in renewable energy as well. Last year, China poured $102.9 billion into solar, wind and other projects according to a report published by the United Nations. The other big polluting country in the world, India too is investing a lot of money on renewable energy. The world’s largest solar power plant was recently commissioned in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. From next year, India will emerge as the third biggest solar market in the world, after China and the US.
