Software developed by BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) could soon be seen in Ford automobiles. The two businesses have signed a deal, according to which, Ford will now have the rights to expand the use of BlackBerry’s QNX software in their automobiles. The automobile maker already uses the software in the in-car infotainment systems.

Its use will now be much wider. However, the terms of the deal or where the software is going to be used was not disclosed in the release. But it is believed that there is a huge scope, particularly with the vehicles of the future.

John Chen, who is the Chief Executive of BlackBerry said, “The future of the automobile is all about embedded intelligence. I believe our expertise in secure embedded software makes us the preferred technology provider to put the smart in the car”.

Blackberry Could Play a Key Part in Autonomous Driving Technologies

John also said, “We can form the basis of the entire vehicle all the way from autonomous drive through to infotainment”.

It increasingly looks like driverless cars are going to be the future sooner rather than later. Many businesses are currently working on developing the technologies to make this happen. Uber, for instance, has already announced their first driverless ride-sharing vehicles will hit the road in 2021. Google and Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) are also working on similar projects.

Then there is Airbus that recently announced the first full prototype of their pilotless self-flying taxi project, Vahana, will be launched by the end of next year. Carmakers Honda and Toyota too have their own projects coming up.

Blackberry Moving Away From the Handset Business

This is good news for the Canada-based BlackBerry Ltd. as the business recently stopped producing their iconic handsets, as they were losing out to competition consistently. Once a leading smartphone maker, BlackBerry eventually lost out to Samsung and Apple. Since then, the company has been focusing on software instead of hardware. Their entry into the automobile industry gives them new hope for growth.

In time, BlackBerry might even go into similar deals with other car makers, which will surely open up an entirely new business opportunity for the company.

It was further revealed that BlackBerry (NASDAQ:BBRY) is currently creating a separate team that will work with Ford to expand the use of the QNX software and Certicom security technology. The team is likely to be ready soon.
