When the first drones were thought of, and they began to come out, they were essentially meant for communication and military use. But that has started to change rapidly. Last month, the online retail giant Amazon Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) made their first drone delivery. A package was delivered to a customer close to Cambridge in England. Jeff Bezos tweeted the news, announcing that it took Amazon 13 minutes from receiving the order to delivering the shipment.

CNN Announces Drone Project to Capture Aerial Imagery

Now, the news broadcaster CNN, which is owned by Time Warner (NYSE:TWX) has announced that they will come out with a new CNN Aerial Imagery and Reporting division, which will be responsible for capturing more aerial images to go with their stories. To begin with, there will be two unmanned drones with CNN Air. These full-time operators will capture drones for CNN, and also Turner Broadcasting and Time Warner, their parent companies.

The Federal Aviation Administration had selected three businesses sometime back, which includes CNN for researching what would be a safe way to use drones for reporting. After receiving the approval, CNN started working with the Georgia Tech Research Institute. This work is ongoing.

It’s true that this is a new dedicated news division, but CNN has used drones for reporting before. The news organization has used unmanned aerial systems for capturing the Louisiana flooding, and also the water crisis in Michigan’s Flint, and also both the presidential nominating conventions.

Terence Burke, the senior Vice President said, “CNN’s cutting-edge development of technology to enhance the way we tell stories is a part of our DNA. We are proud to continue the tradition with CNN Air and to establish a unit that will expand our technological capabilities for newsgathering”.

Other Drone Projects

Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) parent Alphabet had their drone project Wing, which unfortunately they decided to end in November. But there were plans of making Starbucks deliveries with these drones of Google. The company also had an agreement of making food deliveries for Chipotle Mexican Grill, which was discontinued. But Google is still hopeful, wanting to make healthcare deliveries with drones in the future.

Domino’s (NYSE:DPZ) though, has taken a leap forward by using a drone to make their first pizza delivery to a couple in New Zealand. An order for Chicken and Cranberry and Peri-Peri Chicken pizzas was delivered to the couple who stays 20 miles from Auckland.
