Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) has decided to work closely with OpenAI, the non-profit artificial intelligence research group that is headed by Elon Musk.

On Tuesday, OpenAI disclosed that Azure will be the main cloud system OpenAI uses for artificial intelligence and deep learning. Microsoft says they are “excited” with this. Stating their admiration for Microsoft, OpenAI said, “Azure has impressed us by building hardware configurations optimized for deep learning — they offer K80 GPUs with InfiniBand interconnects at scale. We’re also excited by their roadmap, which should soon bring Pascal GPUs onto their cloud”.

OpenAI was established about a year back by the President of Y Combinator Sam Altman, and Elon Musk of Tesla, SpaceX, and SolarCity. Peter Thiel, the PayPal co-founder is a part of OpenAI as well.

The groups want to come out with AI that will create a positive impact on society over the long-term, instead of just profit-motivated software products, which may eventually do more harm than good.

OpenAI to Carry Out Simulation Exercises and AI Training on Azure

In the next few months, this artificial intelligence research group will be using thousands of these machines to carry out several experiments.

The latest virtual machine technology from Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) will help the Musk-led group run simulation exercises and large-scale AI training. Microsoft too will carry out cutting-edge research on their Azure cloud platform.

Microsoft was selected because Azure offers the unique combination of big data, intelligence capabilities of the Azure batch, Microsoft Cognitive Toolkit, machine learning capabilities, and high-performance computing, said Microsoft in a statement.

The World’s Most Powerful Artificial Intelligence Supercomputer

Founded by Bill Gates, Microsoft further stated that their partnership with OpenAI will work towards “democratizing AI and making it accessible to everyone”. Once developed, intelligence will be infused in everyday apps and devices. Everyone will be able to access it through the cloud. It would be the world’s most powerful artificial intelligence.

Sam Altman said, “Microsoft is the large tech company most aligned with us in terms of the goal of democratization to AI technology. This is our most important goal. We are going to create a very important technology”. They don’t want a single company or government to control it.

It will be economically beneficial for Microsoft as well, as every business that uses Azure has to be a paying customer of their cloud services. It has emerged as one of their most lucrative and fastest growing divisions.
