There is some news on developments made in artificial intelligence almost every day now. The New York, United States, based, International Business Machines or IBM (NYSE:IBM) has now revealed that their AI system, Watson, will be deployed in Germany to help doctors diagnose patients.
The AI platform will be solving complex medical issues in the country. In fact, Watson has been deployed already and has worked on about a half dozen cases. The system is based at the University Hospital in Marburg’s “Undiagnosed and Rare Diseases Centre”. It was learned that Watson will be able to combine the capacity and speed of computers and analytical skills of humans.
The company, however, did not disclose the number of cases Watson has diagnosed correctly. Of course, this is not the first time artificial intelligence has been used in medical science. A few hospitals in the United Kingdom are using DeepMind of Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL) already.
Hospitals in Germany Crowded
The University Hospital of Giessen and Marburg has been extremely crowded since it started working in 2013. More than 6,000 patients are in the waiting list at any time. The head of its medical team, Prof Dr. Jurgen Schafer, says, “The number is almost a nightmare. We need new ideas and new technology”.
Patients at the hospital usually have a long medical history. Many of them are seen by up to 40 physicians, but still, there is no confirmed diagnosis. There are thousands of medical documents to look at and confirm. Doctors often get overwhelmed because of the huge data that has to be reviewed and the sheer volume of patients.
IBMs (NYSE:IBM) Watson will be able to help here, and do the work correctly and quickly. It will be of immense help to the doctors and patients, says Dr. Jurgen. The doctor says that he is confident the artificial intelligence system will work well.
However, the move is not without controversy. Many critics are not confident with the idea that technology firms will be able to access patient data. It is important to get patient consent before this, they say.
Watson’s Claim to Fame
Watson was recently under the spotlight when it was able to comfortably beat two champions in the Jeopardy! game. In the game, Watson had to take an answer and figure out its associated clues. To achieve this, the AI platform has to explore and refine many possibilities quickly.
